Background of the Study
Voter apathy in Kaura Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, Nigeria, is a significant concern, affecting electoral participation and the legitimacy of the democratic process. Geopolitical factors, including political stability, regional power dynamics, and socio-economic conditions, play a pivotal role in influencing voter behavior. In Kaura, the regional political climate, characterized by ethnic and religious diversity, coupled with economic challenges, has contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment among potential voters (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024). The region’s exposure to ethnic conflicts, insecurity, and historical political disenfranchisement has led to diminished confidence in the electoral process, further exacerbating voter apathy. This study investigates the geopolitical factors contributing to voter apathy in Kaura, focusing on the interplay of local, state, and national politics.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Voter apathy remains a persistent problem in Kaura LGA, despite efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders to increase voter participation. Political instability, insecurity, and economic hardship in the region have discouraged many citizens from participating in the electoral process. This study seeks to understand the role of these geopolitical factors in fostering voter apathy in Kaura and provide recommendations for increasing electoral participation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To investigate the geopolitical factors influencing voter apathy in Kaura LGA.

  • To assess the impact of ethnic, religious, and political divisions on voter participation in Kaura.

  • To propose strategies for reducing voter apathy and encouraging electoral participation in Kaura.

  • What geopolitical factors contribute to voter apathy in Kaura LGA?

  • How do ethnic, religious, and political dynamics affect voter turnout in Kaura?

  • What measures can be implemented to reduce voter apathy in Kaura?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors, including ethnic and religious divisions, significantly influence voter apathy in Kaura LGA.

  • Insecurity and economic instability contribute to the low voter turnout in Kaura LGA.

  • Addressing these geopolitical factors will increase voter participation in Kaura.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the relationship between geopolitical factors and voter apathy in Kaura LGA. The findings will assist policymakers, electoral bodies, and community leaders in devising strategies to enhance voter turnout and political engagement in the region (Abubakar & Hassan, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Kaura LGA in Kaduna State and focuses on the influence of geopolitical factors on voter apathy. Limitations include the difficulty of obtaining comprehensive data on voter behavior and the influence of political parties in the region.
